About Us

Vox Populi is a professional vocal consort based in Newcastle Upon Tyne whose mission is to bring high quality choral music to the North East of England. The choir regularly performs a variety of repertoire, from early Renaissance works to modern arrangements of contemporary songs, and has developed a reputation in the North East for their engaging themed concert programmes and enchanting performances. The septet has performed in prestigious venues such as Hexham Abbey, Newcastle Cathedral and Ushaw College Chapel and has toured internationally in Germany. As well as presenting concerts, the group is passionate about inspiring a new generation of choral singers, through leading choral workshops and performing alongside school choirs and musicians from local communities.

Our Story

Formed in the summer of 2021, Vox Populi originally began as a quartet of Newcastle University graduates with a passion for choral singing and a desire to make music together. Over the following several years, the choir has steadily expanded both their forces and repertoire, working fervently to discover and hone their individual sound. Vox Populi is now a septet of professional vocalists who reside in the North East of England and rehearse regularly together in Newcastle.

Since their debut performance in 2021, the choir has enjoyed presenting a vast range of exciting collaborations, community-based activities, and captivating concerts across the region and beyond. Notable projects include singing under the Museum of The Moon at Hexham Abbey with The Abbey Choir; performing as soloists for Oliver Tarney’s Magnificat at Ushaw College Chapel with The Durham Singers; curating a composition competition to highlight the works of local composers; working with the internationally renowned Chris Bruerton of The King’s Singers as part of Newcastle University’s Choral Excellence Project; taking part in annual Northern music festivals including Newcastle Early Music Festival and The William Shield Festival; and embarking on an international tour to Germany in 2022.

As Vox Populi is made up of graduates from Newcastle and Durham universities, the group has a particularly strong connection to the North East and is committed to offering accessible opportunities to local communities within the region. Encouraging others to experience the positive benefits of choral singing is a core value of the choir and one that underpins all their activities.

It has undoubtedly been an exciting opening chapter for Vox Populi, and the choir would love for you to join them on the next steps of their journey as they continue to grow, inspire and make music.
